Observe a minute of silence at the Opening Ceremony of 2016 Olympics for Juma the Jaguar
The Issue
Juma the Jaguar was killed after it escaped whilst being used for the 2016 Olympic Torch Ceremony. The jaguar is a near-threatened species that is already extinct in countries like Uruguay and El Salvador.
Qouting Reuters " We made a mistake in permitting the Olympic torch, a symbol of peace and unity, to be exhibited alongside a chained wild animal. This image goes against our beliefs and our values," the local organizing committee Rio 2016 said in a statement."
The organizing committee accepts that what they did was wrong, but that does not bring justice to Juma who is dead becuase of human mistakes.
Keeping in line with the Olympic Charter it is now the responsibility of the International Olympic Committee and Brazilian Olympic Committee to set an example to the whole world by observing a minute of silence at the opening Ceremony for Juma the Jaguar to say that we value the life of Juma.
What better organization than the International Olympic Committee, which aims to build a better world through sport, be sporty enough to say we did a mistake, a grave mistake. We will now not let the death of Juma be in vain, we will tell the world that we must respect life Human or Animal and must take care to ensure that others do not die due to our mistakes.
