Friends, Last month, Life Times Magazine in Sri Lanka ran a cover story titled 'No More Cages' that exposed the blatant animal abuse, gross negligence, incompetence, irregularities and allegations of corruption at the Dehiwala Zoo. During the investigation, LT journalists also uncovered what appears to be a large scale, secretive and highly profitable (legally and illegally conducted) animal trafficking enterprise underway at the Dehiwala Zoo, utilizing its animal hospital, captive breeding programs and administrative offices and legal loopholes that do not provide protections for non-native wildlife such as lions, tigers and orangutans. As part of the exposé, LT Magazine has questioned the disappearance of three baby orangutans born at the Dehiwala Zoo and documented a number of seemingly healthy exotic animals such as lion and tiger cubs being transited in and out of the animal hospital. Based on their findings, LT Magazine has called for a criminal investigation of the Dehiwala Zoo. A video (link below) created by LT Magazine in the interest of the public, has garnered local and international attention, with PETA Asia now joining the call for the closure of the Dehiwala Zoo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nb-r1xPXEE The summary of findings by LT Magazine can be read here in the Editor's Foreword: http://www.lt.lk/2016/04/foreword-no-cages/ All articles pertaining to LT Magazine's exposé can be found here: http://www.lt.lk/cover-story/ More updates to follow. Thank you for your continued support and compassion! *The photo above shows the bathtub-type enclosure that the sea lion is forced to live in (away from public view) for 23 hours of the day when he is not taken out to perform in the Sea Lion Show.
