Thanks to the support of more than 46,000 people, we have delivered our petition to the President of Kenya, His Excellency, Uhuru Kenyatta C.G.H., calling for an end to the capture and use of wild baboons for research.
A delegation from the BUAV, joined by leading field biologist Ian Redmond OBE, also met with The High Commissioner of Kenya to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Mr Lazarus O. Amayo MBS. We welcomed the opportunity to raise our concerns surrounding the capture and use of wild baboons for research and the interest shown by H.E Mr Amayo in discussing this issue.
The BUAV investigation in Kenya revealed that wild baboons were captured and held at the Institute of Primate Research in Nairobi under conditions which breached international guidelines and failed to meet their behavioural and social needs, including being held alone in small barren metal cages. The animals were subjected to disturbing experiments, often by visiting overseas researchers, including from the USA, the UK and Belgium. In the UK, there has been a ban on using wild-caught primates in research since 1995.
The findings of our investigation can be viewed here: http://youtu.be/PjXEYGs6k7I
Our investigation caused an outcry and internationally renowned primatologist, Dr Jane Goodall DBE Founder - the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace told the BUAV:
“I have watched the video that shows, in graphic detail, the conditions endured by some of the baboons at the Institute of Primate Research in Nairobi. I was shocked and deeply distressed to see these intelligent primates - we have been studying them at Gombe National Park since 1966 - being kept in the conditions depicted in your film. These cages are very far removed from the conditions dictated by today’s animal welfare guidelines. In most countries these conditions would not be tolerated and those responsible would be forced to clean up their act.
Any caring and compassionate person will feel as angry and sad as I do after viewing the video. In my professional opinion the facility – at least as depicted in the video – should be closed down.”
Following the release of the BUAV findings, Newcastle University - the UK institution whose researchers were travelling to Kenya to carry out experiments on wild baboons - announced an end to its involvement in this controversial research.
We now call on the President of Kenya to respond to the concern of over 46,000 people and take a stand to dissociate itself from the cruelties of the wild-caught trade by introducing a ban on the capture and use of wild primates for research.
