Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) has announced five additional confirmed cases of a novel coronavirus in the county, as of March 8. This brings the total to nine cases in Contra Costa County. Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, SJSU and many other major colleges and universities in California and numerous other states have suspended their in-class meetings until Spring Break amid the coronavirus outbreak.

While no DVC student has been diagnosed with the virus, it's important to understand the size and scope of the issue in more detail. We know already that this virus could have spread and infected many others but carriers have yet to show any symptoms due to the virus's nature. This introduces a frightening risk of a DVC student carrying the virus and not showing any symptoms while spreading the virus before he/she is diagnosed.

"A quick reminder that if you are a healthy adult, you are not canceling your event or travel or conference because of yourself - but because of the more vulnerable people who will suffer if you become a vector. The number of deaths will depend on how we all behave." - Johannes Urpelainen, Director of Energy, Resources, and Environment at Johns Hopkins SAIS

Although most people who get the infection will only have mild symptoms, the disease can be fatal for some - typically elderly people with compromised immune systems. Precautions should be taken now to protect the vulnerable.

Our physical health, as well as the physical health of residents of Contra Costa County, should be held to the highest standard on any California Community Colleges and I expect that Diablo Valley College will do what is right and responsible to retain their integrity in taking these matters seriously. Our health is paramount to all of us and that is why these preventative measures are necessary.
