I've decided for this update to post an excerpt from Egon Berger's book "44 Months in Jasenovac." Warning it is extremely graphic. This is the true account of a Jewish man who survived 4 years in Jasenovac. This book has been brought back into publication thanks to Berger's family Ruth Block and Ben Hiller. The memoir was first published in 1966 . Egon Berger died in 1988.
"The day after the massacre, Mujica (an Ustase) told his fellow Ustase that he would give a hundred cigars to whomever came up with the cruelest form of torture. I (Egon) had to work at the graveyard that day as well. The horrifying atrocities were committed upon a new group of Serbs and Jews. The prize went to one of the Ustase who made a four inch wooden spike that was placed vertically in the victims mouth. The victim would then get hit in the chin by a gun stock and the spike would go through his skull. In some people it would go through their head and come out. For this cruelest of inventions, Mujica celebrated with alcohol."
The whole book is filled with excerpts like this detailing unspeakable horror, violence and depravity. I am still in the process of reading it myself. It is important we expose what really happened no matter how painful it is.
"44 Months in Jasenovac" can be purchased on Amazon. There is also a kindle version.
