End the United States embargo of Cuba

The United States embargo against Cuba has been in place for over 50 years. On November 13, 2012, the United Nations General Assembly voted against it for the 21st time. Again, the vote was nearly unanimous. Here in the United States, polls show that the majority of the people want to normalize relations with Cuba.

Furthermore, the embargo adds to the suffering of the Cuban people, making it very difficult to get basics like asthma medicine and mammograms. Hurricane Sandy, which devastated large regions of the country, is just the latest example of how the embargo prevents vital aid and materials for reconstruction from arriving where they are desperately needed.

It's time, Mr. President. The embargo is pointless and cruel. End it now.

    El embargo de los Estados Unidos de América contra Cuba se ha mantenido por más de 50 años. El 13 de noviembre de 2012, la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas votó contra el embargo por la vigésima primera vez. Y nuevamente, el voto fue casi unánime. En los Estados Unidos, las encuestas muestran que la mayoría de su pueblo quiere normalizar relaciones con Cuba. 

    Además, el embargo intensifica el sufrimiento del pueblo cubano, haciendo más difícil conseguir cosas básicas como medicamentos para el asma y mamografías. El huracán Sandy, que devastó amplias zonas de Cuba, es el último ejemplo de como el embargo impide la entrada de ayuda vital y materiales para la reconstrucción donde se necesitan con urgencia inmediata.

    Sr. Presidente, llegó el momento. El embargo es inútil y cruel. Levántelo sin demora.
