Petition - Summary and Background

The fight against corruption has remained a constant priority for the Government of H.E. President Muhammadu Buhari since its inception in 2015.  However, corruption has been identified as one of the main spoilers of the president’s ambition to combat this menace especially as Ibrahim Magu, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) – the agency charged with the responsibility to prevent, investigate, prosecute, and penalise economic and financial crimes,  is now embroiled in corruption allegations itself.

The suspended EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu was invited by the presidential probe panel headed by Ayo Salami, a retired President of the Appeal Court to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on July 6 over allegations bordering on corruption and financial misconduct.

Although the Court of Appeal panel has not disclosed to Nigerians the crimes against Magu. However, the Presidential Committee on Audit of Recovered Assets has listed some of Magu’s offences to include not remitting interest on the 550 billion naira the EFFC under his leadership, recovered from the treasury looters, using several ways of siphoning money and collecting bribe from his suspects, using services of a Bureau De Change to steal and launder money, using a pastor to launder money and buying a property worth N573M in Dubai, and refusing to cooperate with a UK firm to enable the firm charge Diezani Alison Madueke to court.

Although Presidency has issued two statements - the first statement was to suspend Magu while appointing Muhammed Umar to take charge of the commission so that Magu can clear his name, and the second statement was to justify why they suspended Magu noting that he was not immune to investigation.

Our Request and Desired Outcome

1.      We have seen that most of these corruption cases involving high profile public officers being swept under the carpet. Since the establishment of the anti-corruption agency, no EFCC Chairman has been charged to court on corruption allegations despite the many corruption cases levelled against some of the former EFCC Bosses. We therefore request that the Federal Government of Nigeria investigate these corruption allegations and consequently charge the EFCC Boss to court.

2.      The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) earlier this year honoured the embattled former EFFC Boss for helping the US arrest ‘167 fraudsters’ in Nigeria. Now that the hunter, is now the hunted, we would like to request that the FBI withdraws the honour they extended to Magu in light of the corruption charges levelled against him.

3.      We request the New Acting Chairman Mr Mohammed Umar of EFCC as a matter of urgency to re-open all the files and cases investigated by Mr Ibrahim Magu.

We are available to answer any specific questions that you may have.

Signed
