GET RID OF WRISTBANDS AT IFC TAILGATES

The Issue

Due to recent changes in IFC and PHA policy, tailgating at UMD will look drastically different this football season. Understandably so, the University has requested that tailgates off-campus cease. The city of College Park deserves quiet Saturdays, on that we can all agree. However if the school wishes to continue letting spirit flourish on game day, they must reconsider the policies at place. Let us first look at the sexism displayed by the authorities at hand; every fraternity is given 2x the number of wrist bands needed for their chapter, while sororities are expected to independently secure a wrist band from a fraternity boy. Why respectable young women who wish to celebrate their school and their team are not equally as deserving as men not only strikes a cord in the Greek community, but the University at large. Which brings up the second point, why has the University of Maryland provided a special tailgate for Greek life, only guaranteeing admittance to the male percentage of the small portion of the school? One can't help but conclude that those with wrist bands bestowed upon them are valued most highly by the school, but why is their spirit the only one that we wish to celebrate? As a Big Ten School, we should be equally as capable as the teams that we play to organize a tailgate that fosters the values team sports perpetuate, unity and pride, for the entire community. Please sign this petition not only to attract President Loh's attention, but also urge a change in our game day rituals on campus. As we watch the surrounding College Park community expand and grow, it is only appropriate that we do that same for the campus community.
