Option for P/F Classes

Option for P/F Classes
The Issue
We as members of the John Carroll Community, strongly believe that our learning experience has been greatly damaged by the impact of COVID-19. With the impossibly difficult decision made by John Carroll University to keep classes online for the Fall Semester of 2020, we strongly believe that we as students, deserve the OPTION to choose to take classes as P/F without being penalized. We ask that the University recognize that a variety of students learn in different ways, and some students’ grades are negatively impacted by being online despite all the extra effort and hard work that professors have been putting in. Additionally, when we scheduled courses in April, many of us assumed that we would be in-person. The announcement to online classes came on Friday, September 4th which was the last day to change/drop classes. Many of us found this unfair as we were not able to properly adjust our schedules for an online environment. Furthermore, many students like Freshman need time to adjust to college courses before being placed into an online environment. Since, they were not able to have that adjustment period, there needs to be some leniency towards them and other students. A final point worth mentioning is that last semester we were allowed to take classes P/F under circumstances that mirror the ones that we face now as we are still online and technology is still an imperfect substitute to the face-to-face interaction that John Carroll University prides itself on. If you agree that students should be allowed to choose to take core classes P/F, please sign this petition.
