On May 5th, the Biden administration declared that they would temporarily suspend patent rights on the COVID-19 Vaccine. The petition, targeted emails, and tweets that we took part in, I believe, provided some of the critical pressure needed to produce this outcome. And this is something to be immensely proud of (read more here: https://wapo.st/2QsatbJ I remain amazed and grateful to you all and considering that over 170,000 people signed this petition (created by just one unpaid person) is indicative of where public opinion is on this issue.
There is still much work to do. Would you kindly view, sign and share the next step in this effort? Visit http://bit.ly/COVIDVACCINE4ALL
There are trade secrets and technical knowledge not in a patent that drug companies possess that are really important to scale up manufacturing. To this effect, the World Health Organization (WHO) had created the mRNA technical transfer hub to help facilitate this sharing of knowledge but Moderna, Pfizer, and CureVac (another company that produced an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine) have not participated. It's really important that they do so. As of 5/18, Germany remains opposed to waiving patents on the vaccine. This is important as they've produced some of the vaccines themselves, and if an initiative to waive patents comes through the World Health Organization, it only takes one country to veto this action.
So please join me in raising our voices to urge drug companies and world leaders to put people above profits and do all we can to support the scaling of production of these life-saving vaccines.
