Award John Williams the Presidential Medal of Freedom

John Williams is one of the greatest American composers of all time. His work has left an indelible mark on popular culture for more than six decades. His music has laid the foundation for many classic movies and franchises, including the Star Wars saga, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, two Home Alone films, the Indiana Jones films, two Jurassic Park films, Schindler's List and the first three Harry Potter films. He has the second most Academy Award nominations of all time, behind only Walt Disney, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. Williams has won 25 Grammy Awards, seven British Academy Film Awards, five Academy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor a civilian can receive, is awarded to “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” Williams easily fits this criteria. His contributions to American culture are undisputed, and his influence in the field of American film and television is unrivaled. His music has inspired generations of performers and composers.
President Biden should acknowledge the 89-year-old Williams with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in honor of the impact he has made on so many lives and on the fabric of American culture.
