Adjunct (contingent) faculty are the vast majority of educators teaching courses in higher education across the United States. Yet adjuncts are paid considerably less than our tenure track counterparts, carry a significant student debt burden, have limited job security or pathways towards upward economic mobility, and we often lack any access to healthcare insurance and retirement benefits. Our community colleges and universities cannot stay afloat without our labor! We call on President Joe Biden, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, and Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh to cancel all federal student loan debt, require that all public institutions of higher education pay pro-rata, to include absolute proportional pay for adjuncts for teaching, research, and service. (If a full time tenured or tenure track assistant professor teaches 4 courses a year, an adjunct should receive 25% of an assistant professor’s annual salary, for each course taught.) We call for salary caps on all administrators of public higher education not to exceed the governor's salary in each institution's state. We call for universal healthcare for all educators.
