Restoring Dr. Ian Isidore Smart's Tenure

Restoring Dr. Ian Isidore Smart's Tenure
The Issue
Dr. Ian Isidore Smart has contributed immensely to the field of Spanish Language Studies and Black Studies. He co-founded the "Afro-Hispanic Review" and has founded his own press, Original World Press. He did this in the tradition of Marcus Garvey, Carter G. Woodson, and Dr. Tony Martin, in order to resist the conservative academic presses and breakdown the wall between academia and the Black community. The books from his press are written from an Afrocentric perspective and includes the centrality of ancient Kemet. How the Howard University has treated him despite his journals and his books advancing the field has been unconscionable. In July 2015, Professor Smart was unfairly charged with violating Howard's Code of Ethics for selling books to students "in exchange for a grade of A." In July of 2017, the President and Provost suspended Professor Smart without pay. This punitive action by the President and Provost is egregious and goes against Howard's own Code of Ethics. The work of Dr. Ian Smart reflects the strongest of Spanish Language studies and Black Studies. It is essential that Dr. Ian Smart have his tenure restored.
