Dear President Hollande and First Minister Sturgeon,

The outcome of the British EU Referendum was a shock to the whole of the United Kingdom and Europe, but in particular for the Scots, who voted very clearly to remain in the EU, in stark contrast to our southern neighbours.

The risks posed Scotland's people and economy, as well as those residents from the EU who reside in Scotland cannot be overstated.

The referendum result also shows the clear division between the views of the people of Scotland and those in England.

Irrespective of whether or not Scotland remains part of the United Kingdom, I would ask that you reinstate the Auld Alliance of 1295, and reinstate the mutual citizenship provisions of the Alliance which were repealed in 1906. This would enable the Scots to obtain French citizenship and remain part of Europe, and for the French to become Scots, enabling them to more fully appreciate the warm welcome and cultural experiences that Scotland has always offered the French.

Given the rich and longstanding friendships between France and Scotland, I implore you to come to the aid of Scotland, and Scots around the world, during this time of uncertainty.

In return we will pledge to support France in all major sporting events, except when playing Scotland.
