Make Carroll University a Sanctuary Campus

Make Carroll University a Sanctuary Campus
The Issue
Dear President Hastad and Carroll Administration,
As a result of the recent presidential election, we, Carroll students, staff, and faculty are calling on you to make Carroll University a sanctuary campus. This would mean publicly affirming current policies that protect those who are undocumented and DACAmented* students, staff and their family who are at risk of deportation, but form a part of the Carroll University community.
Many schools across the country have come out in support of marginalized communities, and have established themselves as sanctuary campuses.
By declaring Carroll a Sanctuary campus, it will affirm good public policy that currently treats schools as a sensitive location where Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials should not be conducting deportations. It also means that Carroll Public Safety will not assist local, state, and federal law enforcement to question or detain any student based on their suspected immigration status. Carroll also will continue to respect students privacy and not share personal data with the federal government in order to deport or create a federal registry of vulnerable groups.
It is crucial that Carroll take action to assert its commitment to defend its students, and establish an ideal, and safe environment for learning. We call on Dr. Hastad to uphold all of the four pillars of Carroll's educational experience, especially that of enduring values. We believe that deferred action for young people is not just beneficial for the individual but for society as a whole, by allowing people of all backgrounds to pursue an education and give back to the community.
We are anxiously awaiting your response.
*Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program that started in 2012 by President Obama to protect youth who were brought to U.S. before the age of 16 and meet certain criteria such as having graduated from a U.S. high school, GED or honorably discharged from the U.S. Military. The program provides youth with relief from deportation and a renewable work permit.
