The Issue

If you're a Binghamton University Student you've more than likely studied at the campus' largest, nicest library on campus: Glenn G Bartle Library. However if you've ever had work to do on the weekend or had a test early in the week that you wanted to study for, then you've probably been inconvenienced by the libraries hindering policy of closing early at 8PM On Fridays and Saturdays (or 7PM if you prefer the Fine Arts section/North Reading Room.) The university may think that's fine considering there is available study space in the Marketplace, or if you are an on campus student you have the dorm floor lounges/room desks to do work. All seems nice on paper, but as i'm sure you've experienced-the marketplace is often playing loud music, people are talking, And it can get freezing cold at times making it impossible to actually be productive. Or in the dorm buildings, it's easy to be distracted by loud friends/floormates or people who decide to talk in the lounges while you're doing work. It's annoying, unproductive, and leaves many of us to just call it quits earlier or struggling to get work done despite it all. Or if you're an off campus student who comes to campus to do work, getting kicked out early and sent home to try and do work in a house/apartment with friends who are probably hanging out and being loud, you're being deprived of valuable study time as well. These environments are not as conducive to doing work on weekend nights as the library potentially could be. We as students need these extended weekend hours to optimize studying productivity in order to get the grades we need and pursue our passions. Please sign this petition asking Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger to extend Glenn G Bartle Library hours to 12:00AM Friday and Saturday Nights.
