Bring Back Our Children

The American civic religion is based on the belief in the sanctity of the individual, on the recognition that society is only as strong as the family unit, and on the acceptance of the Biblical obligations of mutual civility, respect and care.

All of these principles are being violated daily at our borders by U.S. immigration officials who separate children from their parents seeking asylum.  The children, as young as four, then spend months alone, scared and deprived of parental love, care, and supervision.

This gratuitous cruelty has been ordered purportedly to “deter” asylum seekers.  But asylum seekers, fleeing for their lives, are not deterred since they have little choice but to seek shelter in the United States.  But even if this policy were to deter illegal immigration, it has no moral weight.  No justification exists for this inhuman behavior.

Every tyrant in history, from Egypt’s Pharaoh, to the Syrian Antiochus, to Ceasars, Tsars and tyrants worldwide, all knew that the worst possible punishment was to threaten a person’s children.  For all parents, the ultimate nightmare is separation from their children, and the infinite pain and worry that ensues.

How did America become so cruel?  A country founded on the divinely endowed right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?  “One nation under God” means one nation under God’s laws; and those laws are unambiguous:

“You shall not taunt nor oppress a stranger…. You shall not cause pain to any widow or orphan.  If you cause him pain, if they cry out to me, I will surely hear their screams.” Exodus 22:20-23

“Do not oppress the stranger, the widow, the orphan.” Jeremiah 6:7

“….look after orphans and widows in their distress…”  James 1:27

“….as for the orphan, do not oppress him.”  Koran 93.9

We hereby petition the President of the United States, the Senate, and the House of Representatives, to immediately stop the practice of separating children from their immigrant parents while in government custody.  This policy accomplishes nothing except human pain and anguish.  This practice is inhuman. This practice violates national law, international law, and the law of God.  This practice constitutes cruel and unusual punishment; and all to “deter” what we all seek – the American dream.

Our souls, and our future, are at stake, for God is watching, and listening.
