President Biden removed “No Taxation Without Representation” from the Presidential Limo
The Issue
As the President of the DC Young Democrats and a tenacious advocate for statehood, I wanted to comment on the recent discovery that President Joe Biden has removed “No Taxation Without Representation” from his presidential limousine license plates. “No Taxation Without Representation” is not just a catchphrase printed on every D.C. car license plate, it is a statement that highlights the fight for DC Statehood and reaching full voting rights for nearly 700,000 tax-paying American Citizens, who are treated as second-class. We know this is a big deal. President Clinton and Obama embodied this statement during their presidency, but President Bush and Trump did not. History has shown that this it is an indicator of support from our highest level of government, particularly from democratic presidents.
D.C. statehood is a civil rights issue. Denying the people of D.C. representation is an act of voter suppression and has been a stain on American democracy for the past 200 years. 700,000, mostly Black and Brown D.C. residents are denied a vote in Congress, and we do not have Senators to represent our interests on important issues that impact our day-to-day lives. It is therefore up to the rest of the nation to demand that Washingtonians be granted fundamental voting rights guaranteed to all Americans by the basic creed of our democracy.
As the incoming President of DC Young Democrats, I am urging President Biden to live up to his commitment to supporting DC Statehood. Removing the fight for statehood from the presidential limousine license plate is a complete disregard for our struggle. President Biden, if you care about voting rights and racial justice, will you fight with us at all costs, to live up to our true creed of being the “Land of the Free” and put “No Taxation Without Representation” back on your license plate as your democratic predecessors? Will you act with us and push statehood legislation for a vote? The urgency of this moment is now. Sign our Change.org petition to urge President Biden to take action now.
