President Biden Exonerate Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey

The Issue

We call upon President Joseph Biden, Congressional Leaders and the US Department of Justice to take immediate action on the posthumous exoneration of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, a distinguished national hero of Jamaica and Global Leader.

For decades, civil rights and congressional leaders have petitioned U.S. Presidents and the U.S. Congress to take action.  Marcus Garvey was wrongly charged, tried, falsely convicted, and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit mail fraud exactly 101 years ago in 1923.

Among other historic travesties, his imprisonment precipitated the decline of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Community League (also known as UNIA), destruction of the shipping company Black Star Line, Black Star Nurses, The Negro World Newspaper, Negro Factories Association and dismantling of UNIA chapters (Garveyites) and millions of members worldwide, including Africa, which were founded to promote and practice Pan Africanism, African Liberation, and Sovereign Self-Sufficiency.

Despite his significant contributions to the economic advancement and human rights for People of African Descent worldwide, Marcus Garvey was convicted of mail fraud in 1923—a charge widely considered to be politically motivated and unfair. Marcus Garvey became a main target of U.S. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and America’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

His vindication remains pending at the US Office of the Pardon Attorney, Department of Justice. President Biden's intervention can rectify this historical injustice and honor Garvey's monumental legacy.

We urge all residents of Delaware, the American people, Caribbean people,  People of African Descent throughout the Sixth Region and supporters of justice worldwide to join this important plea to President Joseph Biden.

Sign this petition in support of Garvey's Posthumous Exoneration and call on President Biden, Delaware Congressional Leadership and U.S. Government Officials to honor their pledge to address historical injustice by acting NOW.
