Preserving the benefit of St Mary's Secret Garden Hackney

Preserving the benefit of St Mary's Secret Garden Hackney
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are deeply saddened and concerned by the closure of St Mary’s Secret Garden in Hackney due to a shortfall in core funding. For over 25 years, this cherished space has been a vital resource for the local community and individuals with support needs. It has provided not only hands-on gardening opportunities but also a haven of inclusion, connection, and healing through horticulture and ecotherapy.
St Mary’s Secret Garden has empowered countless individuals to combat isolation, develop valuable skills, gain qualifications, and build confidence. It has fostered a greener, healthier, and more cohesive community, offering a lifeline to many who relied on its programs and serene environment.
We commend the unwavering dedication of the staff, volunteers, and gardeners who have nurtured this extraordinary space, making it a beacon of hope and belonging in our borough.
We urge Hackney Council to act decisively and ensure the future use of this site remains dedicated to community benefit. Specifically, we request the council to preserve this space as a green resource, creating opportunities for people with learning disabilities and support needs, promoting environmental education, and fostering connection among residents.
St Mary’s Secret Garden has been—and can continue to be—a cornerstone of a healthier, more inclusive Hackney. We call on the council to protect its legacy and invest in its future. We are not seeking donations but a demonstration of community support. Thank you.
