The Issue

As a small business owner in Versailles, Indiana, I have witnessed firsthand the vital role that our beautiful state park plays in attracting tourists and supporting the local economy. The Versailles State Park is not just a piece of land but a cornerstone of our community's identity, drawing visitors with its hiking/bike trails, camping, diverse wildlife, and, most notably, its main attraction—the lake.

Tourism is a significant economic driver for Versailles, and the state park is essential in providing recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike. However, our beloved park is at risk. Without adequate funding and maintenance, the natural beauty and functionality of Versailles State Park—particularly the lake—are in jeopardy.

The lake and dam have not received the required maintenance needed to ensure it remains clean, safe, and sustainable for activities such as fishing, non motorized boating, and a home to treasured wildlife observation. Maintenance efforts have not taken place due to insufficient or reallocated funds for overall park care. This neglect is leading to long-term ecological damage, aging facilities, and decline in tourist interest, adversely impacting local businesses and the community at large.

To secure the future of Versailles State Park, we need immediate action to allocate necessary funds to maintain and preserve the lake and its surrounding areas. By investing in necessary repair, regular upkeep and improvement projects, we can enhance the park's offerings, promote sustainable tourism, and ensure it remains a healthy environment for future generations.

We urge our State Government, local officials, community leaders, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to prioritize the budgetary needs of Versailles State Park. Investing in our park is investing in our future—it is crucial for the economic wellbeing of our community and the protection of our local natural heritage.

Please join me in advocating for a brighter future for Versailles State Park by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that this invaluable resource continues to be a treasure for residents and visitors alike. Sign today to show your support.
