The Issue

We, the undersigned members of the tennis community, strongly disagree with the recent decision made by USTA Southern to change the mixed doubles rating system from a combination rating system to a straight rating system. We believe this decision harms lower-ranked players, limits league play, creates inconsistency across the national level, and restricts opportunities for higher-ranked players.
We respectfully request that USTA Southern reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions that preserve the spirit of mixed doubles while addressing any concerns. Our concerns are as follows:
1 Denying lower-ranked players the chance to play at a higher level: The change eliminates the opportunity for lower-ranked players to improve by competing against stronger opponents.
2 Limiting players' league play: The new format discourages diverse team compositions and hampers the growth and enjoyment of mixed doubles.
3 Inconsistency across the national level: The decision being limited to USTA Southern raises concerns about unequal treatment and a lack of consistent rules.
4 Restricting opportunities for higher-ranked players: The straight rating system may prevent higher-ranked players from participating in multiple leagues or, in the case of 5.0 rated players, from playing mixed doubles at all. This restriction unfairly limits their ability to engage in competitive play and hinders their overall development as players.
We urge USTA Southern to recalibrate the rating calculations, implement additional criteria, or find other means to ensure fair and competitive play while maintaining the benefits of the combination rating system.
We kindly request a response to this petition, and we believe our collective voice represents the concerns of numerous members of the tennis community who wish to see the sport flourish in USTA Southern in a fair and inclusive manner.
Thank you for your attention and consideration.
