Preserve the Tradition of "My Sweet Woodruff Home"
The Issue
For over 15 years, the song “My Sweet Woodruff Home” has been a sacred and sentimental tradition at Woodruff Scout Camp, reserved for staff who have committed three or more summers to enriching youth scouts and maintaining one of the largest and program-diverse camps in the USA. Earning the right to sing "My Sweet Woodruff Home" is an important milestone that represents growth, dedication, and unity among returning staff.
This year, a change was made to allow anyone to sing the song, regardless of years served. While inclusivity is deeply important, we believe this shift unintentionally dilutes the meaning and emotional significance of the tradition for those who have earned it through their dedication.
We are asking for a revision that promotes both inclusivity and tradition. 1st and 2nd year staffers hum the melody in the back while 3rd year staffers and up sing in the front. That way, everyone is involved, but dedicated staffers still get to experience the milestone of singing this time-honored Woodruff tradition.
We welcome open discussion and compromise, but we strongly feel that this tradition deserves to be honored and protected.
