The State of California has long respected the provision of a standard deduction for diverse classes of individuals, including the widowed. It is seen as an essential piece providing financial breathing space under distinctly challenging circumstances. However, this benefit is under threat and needs to be defended. Eliminating these deductions would place undue financial stress on the widowed populations who are already navigating the painful journey of personal loss. The United States Census Bureau data shows that California had an estimated 1.3 million widowed residents in 2019 (Source: U.S. Census Bureau). Stripping them of this critical deduction would be unfair and inhumane. For the sake of equity, financial stability, and respect for our fellow Californians who have lost their significant other, this standard deduction must be maintained. We urge policymakers to stand with the widowed communities in preserving their financial rights.
