A logical approach to land use planning is that large scale industrial developments don’t belong in rural townships.

Mahoning Township in Lawrence County, PA received a preliminary land development application for a 16 building data center site to be developed by SS Penn LLC on property owned by Powder Mill Works, LLC. The site encompasses land in Mahoning Township along with the neighboring North Beaver Township, and is shockingly only approximately 1 mile from the Mohawk School District school buildings. 

While few specifics about this exact project are known, what we do know about similar sized data centers is that they cause irreversible change to the landscape, affect electric rates, impact water supply and quality, can produce far reaching noise and vibrations, and have health impacts that affect quality of life. This area has already experienced and still feels the hardships caused by mining, steel mill operations, and tragic industrial accidents and should not be subjected to even more damage caused by large industrial operations.

Many individuals and families live in this area because they treasure a quiet, private life in a serene community. That way of life is threatened when the scale and scope of proposed economic development is not aligned with the characteristics and values of the community.
