Preserve the rural character of Harrison County Farm and surrounding properties.
The Issue
My name is Angel Kibler Middleton and I am writing to you with a heavy heart and a deep concern for the future of our beloved community in Gulfport, Mississippi. Four generations of my family have cherished and cultivated our horse farm situated next to the historic Harrison County Farm. This land is not just a property; it is a part of our heritage, as well as of the shared history of our community.
Currently, there is a proposal to construct a 79-home subdivision next to our farming properties. My neighbors, like myself, have dedicated their lives to working the land. We reside on expansive acreages of 107 acres, 40 acres, 26 acres, and more, where we raise livestock and live a rural lifestyle. Such a development poses imminent risks to our livestock, our farmland, and even the future residents. Urban and agricultural areas operate under different conditions, and creating such close proximity places both at risk for unintended but potentially grave consequences.
The rural character of this community is vital not only for us who live here but also for Harrison County's identity. The historic Harrison County Farm is an emblem of our agricultural history, and developing a high-density housing subdivision will jeopardize this history and disrupt the delicate balance of our ecosystem.
This area is a sanctuary for both people and wildlife. The peaceful and natural environment we have can be irreversibly altered by the proposed urban development. Increased traffic, potential pollution, and likely strain on local resources are just some of the concerns that couldn't be more alien to our way of life. Execution of this project could lead to accidents, injuries, or even fatalities for both livestock and residents who are not accustomed to agricultural surroundings.
We humbly request local authorities, developers, and our fellow citizens to reconsider this project. Let's work on preserving the rural and historical character of the area by exploring alternative solutions that do not compromise our community or its identity. Sustainable development and community planning must prioritise the well-being and legacy of the current residents and the land itself.
Please join us in this crucial endeavor. Your signature can help preserve a piece of our heritage and ensure the continued safety and conservation of the lands we hold dear.
