Preserve the Revolutionary Grounds community water station
The Issue
As a proud member of the Tucson community, I am reaching out to implore the property owner, landlord, property management to reconsider their decision requiring Revolutionary Grounds Books & Coffee to dismantle its community water station. This vital resource has been a beacon of support and sustainability for our community, providing access to clean drinking water for over two years.
Revolutionary Grounds has become a fundamental part of our Tucson neighborhood. More than just a coffee shop and bookstore, it has established itself as a pillar of community spirit and outreach. The water station, located at a central and accessible spot, offers free, clean drinking water to passersby, local commuters, and the city’s homeless population. It serves countless individuals who rely on this resource during Tucson's hot, dry months. This initiative has not just quenched the physical thirst of many, it has also symbolized a commitment to community welfare.
The unfortunate move to remove this water station threatens to disrupt the availability of this basic human necessity. Tucson's climate can be unforgiving, with temperatures often soaring into triple digits. The effects of the climate crisis have made access to water more crucial than ever. According to the National Weather Service, Tucson experiences an average of 90 days with temperatures exceeding 100°F. Depriving the community of this resource could have dire repercussions.
The removal decision might stem from logistical concerns or misaligned priorities on planning and management. However, there must be ways to address these concerns without dismantling such an essential community service. Collaborative dialogue among stakeholders to find a sustainable solution is imperative.
I urge the property owner, and Revolutionary Grounds management to explore options like:
- Formal agreements detailing maintenance responsibilities
- Incorporating the station into water conservation and management plans
This approach will ensure keeping the water station operational and sustainable. Let’s work together to uphold the ethos of community care and solidarity that Revolutionary Grounds has so wonderfully embodied.
I call on all Tucson residents and allies beyond to support this cause. Your signature on this petition will be pivotal in demonstrating to decision-makers the importance of this initiative and expressing our shared community values. Let us join forces to preserve access to basic human necessities and continue to support our beloved Tucson community.”
