As a local parent, my children developed their skating skills right at the Matthews Park outdoor ice rink. The Minnesota winters are made significantly more enjoyable due to this local gem. Most times I've skated at Matthews Park, I see parents or grandparents skating with their children, and often there are kids and adults playing pick-up hockey. The Matthews Park outdoor ice rinks are a community gathering place, exhibiting the value of fun, accessible activities for people of all ages.

However, the future of the Matthews Park ice rink is at risk, as the Park Board is considering cutting the Matthews Park ice rinks for budgetary reasons. 

This rink is not just another average park amenity. It is a vital part of our community that contributes to making ice skating and hockey available to people who otherwise wouldn't be able to access these activities. It is one of the few things to do outside in winter. The rink also serves as a community gathering space where neighbors who rarely see each other during winter get to remain connected. Last but not least, the rink is used by children in the Rec Plus program, and the loaner skates in the warming house get used by many local children who get to try skating, without the cost & hassle of finding a place to buy skates.
