Preserve the name of James Brown Arena

Preserve the name of James Brown Arena
The Issue
To: Augusta Entertainment Complex, Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority and Augusta City Commissioners
We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority and the Augusta City Commissioners to retain the name "James Brown Arena" for the new downtown entertainment complex currently under construction.
Background:
The original James Brown Arena, opened in 1980 and was named in honor of Augusta's iconic "Godfather of Soul," James Brown, on August 22, 2006. In June 2024, demolition began on the old arena to make way for a new, state-of-the-art venue. The new arena is expected to open in 2026 and will be integrated with the Bell Auditorium under one roof .
James Brown was not only a global music legend but also a proud son of Augusta, whose legacy continues to inspire and unite our community. His name on the arena serves as a testament to his contributions to music, culture, and our city's identity.
Our Request:
We ask that the new arena be named "James Brown Arena" to honor his enduring legacy. This name is more than a title; it is a symbol of Augusta's rich cultural heritage and a beacon for future generations.
Why This Matters:
Cultural Identity: The name "James Brown Arena" is synonymous with Augusta's identity and pride.
Community Support: Many residents and fans worldwide associate the arena with James Brown's legacy.
Tourism and Economic Impact: Events at the arena attract visitors, boosting local businesses and tourism.
Consistency: Maintaining the name ensures continuity and respect for our city's history. Other Icons recognize Mr. Brown’s significance. It’s only right that his hometown does so as well.
Conclusion:
Changing the name of the arena would not only erase a significant part of Augusta's history but also disregard the wishes of countless community members who hold James Brown's legacy dear. We urge the Augusta Entertainment Complex, the Coliseum Authority and City Commissioners to honor James Brown by preserving his name on the new arena.
Thank you for considering our request.
