Initially, our petition to preserve Line Creek Forest only included the 300 acres that the Park Hill School District planned to develop. However since the petition, we've received the Kansas City's master plan which also includes adding retail shops to the acreage in the north part of the forest, so we've expanded our focus to include that land as well. Visit lastKCforest.com to see the city's plan. Our group has also continued to grow, and we now make up a team of parents, students and people who live and work in Kansas City. In the past few weeks, we've had several conversations with city and school representatives, and received some media coverage. Here's a quick update, which includes: 1. Being featured in a segment on KCTV5's 5 p.m. news on Wednesday, Oct 18. The story was also posted on KCTV5's Facebook page. 2. Talking with lead city planner, John Debauche, who indicated in early October that no permits had yet been filed related to construction projects on the land. This means we still have time to make our voices heard. 3. Meeting with the Park Hill School District superintendent, Jeanette Cowherd, and attending school board meetings to share feedback about the school's plans for the forest. Currently, there are no commitments from the school to preserve the majority of the forest. In fact, much of the forest is earmarked for future development and/or sale. However, the school has been soliciting feedback from its constituents about their long-term plans. If you've already signed the petition and want to reach out to the school directly to let them know your thoughts about preserving the forest, you can find out more at lastKCforest.com. 4. Meeting with Councilman Dan Fowler to share the concerns of our citizens and talk about Kansas City's plan for the Line Creek area. This promises to be the first of many conversations with our elected representatives. 5. Talking with foresters from the Missouri Department of Conservation who shared Kansas City's plan to increase tree coverage by 10% and provided information about the importance of forests, including improving water run-off/flood management, air quality and more. What's next? We'll be posting signs around the trail and reaching out to neighborhood associations located near the forest to build awareness. We'll also be updating this petition to be more comprehensive and include the additional acreage that's in jeopardy. Thanks for being a part of this petition! Your voice is important.
