The Issue

Preserving Pembroke Pines' Grateful Place in American Music History!

The Clock is Ticking: We have until October 1st, 2026, to preserve Pembroke Pines' place in music history!

On May 22, 1977, the Grateful Dead played a legendary show at the Hollywood Sportatorium in Pembroke Pines, FL. Official archivist Dick Latvala famously noted that this performance "tears apart Ithaca." 50 years later, the building is gone, but the music survives thanks to legendary audio heroes.

By signing this petition, you are demanding three things:

  1. 📜Official Recognition: The City of Pembroke Pines Mayor or City Commission declares May 22nd as "Grateful Pembroke Pines Day.

  2.  🎖️Honor the Sound Engineers and Archivists: The city officially honors Betty Cantor-Jackson, Charlie Miller, and Rob Eaton for saving these master tapes.

  3. ✍️ National Preservation: Mobilize the community to formally nominate this 5/22/77 recording to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry before the October 1st, 2026 deadline. ⚡💀🌹

About the people we propose that Pembroke Pines Honor:

Betty Cantor-Jackson

Betty Cantor-Jackson
The legendary Grateful Dead recording engineer and one of the most influential audio engineers in the history of live improvisational rock. As a pioneering woman in a heavily male-dominated industry, she earned the complete trust of Jerry Garcia and developed a legendary status among Grateful Dead fans for producing the "Betty Boards"—widely considered the gold standard of live concert recordings.

Charlie Miller
One of the most respected audio archivists in the Grateful Dead community, whose restoration and mastering work helped make this recording widely accessible in exceptional quality. On November 26, 2020 Charlie Miller distributed his definitive master reel restoration of the Pembroke Pines 1977 show to the community. This is historic because many believe it is the first time the raw, unedited master tape lineage bypassed commercial gatekeeping.

Rob Eaton
Grateful Dead historian, guitarist, and co-founder of Dark Star Orchestra, whose meticulous physical restoration of the original 1977 master tapes — rescued from decades of decay after being scattered in a 1986 storage auction — preserved the soundboard quality that makes this recording, later released as Dick's Picks Vol. 3, possible to hear today, preserved for future generations.

Without the efforts of these individuals and many others in the Grateful Dead archival community, countless listeners would never have experienced this historic performance.

What survives 300 years from now depends on what we choose to preserve today.

Let us preserve this extraordinary performance for future generations and ensure that Pembroke Pines' place in American music history is never forgotten.

As Pete Lavezzoli, drummer of Crazy fingers and Grateful Dead historian, wrote in his published Dead base review of this performance: "This classic May 1977 performance shows Jerry in the best possible light, musically and especially vocally... This show is certainly among the top five of all time."
