Preserve the Joel E. Smilow Boys and Girls Club in the South Bronx
The Issue
I am a former youth member of the Joel E. Smilow Boys and Girls Club, having joined at age 10. Now, at 60 years old, I can confidently say that this club has been instrumental in shaping my life. It was here that I discovered my passion for the arts and learned the craft of photography which led to a fulfilling career in various sectors as a result.
The Joel E. Smilow Boys and Girls Club is more than just a building; it's an institution that nurtures dreams, fosters talent, and provides opportunities for countless young people in South Bronx to learn new skills outside of their school curriculum.
However, this beacon of hope is under threat as there are plans to close it down and sell off the property. This would be devastating for the thousands of youth members who rely on its critical programming every day and are provided with life-changing and beneficial instruction and guidance.
According to data from New York City's Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD), over 50% of youth in South Bronx live below poverty line. The club offers them an escape from their challenging circumstances by providing safe spaces where they can engage in constructive activities after school hours. This includes our beloved Morrisania and neighboring communities
Closing down this club would mean depriving these children access to resources they desperately need - resources that could potentially change their lives as it did mine over 5 decades ago.
We cannot let this happen! We must stand together as a community to ensure our future generations have access to these vital services provided by the Joel E. Smilow Boys and Girls Club.
Please sign this petition now! Let us show our collective power against such decisions that threaten our community's well-being! Together we can save our beloved club!
