The Issue

The historic sailing ship, Falls of Clyde, stands as a unique testament to our maritime heritage. Built in 1878, she is the last surviving 19th-century cargo ship of her kind, and carries immense historical significance as the only ship still afloat that once sailed under the flag of an independent Hawaii. Preserving her is not only crucial for Hawaii's heritage but also for the maritime history shared with Scotland and the world at large.

There is an imminent threat looming over Falls of Clyde – a threat of being scuttled at sea this autumn. This event would not only erase an irreplaceable piece of history but also diminish the cultural and historical tapestry that links Hawaii with maritime industries of the past.

To prevent this loss, we urge the Governor of Hawaii to engage actively with charitable groups both in Hawaii and Scotland. Efforts should focus on restoring and maintaining the ship, ensuring that she remains a tangible link to our shared past and a source of inspiration for future generations.

Our request does not necessitate additional funding burdens on the state; instead, it calls for leaders to leverage the resources and expertise of international charities dedicated to preserving historical vessels. By doing so, the state would demonstrate a commitment to historical preservation, honoring both its local and global heritage.

We ask the Governor to take immediate action to safeguard this important symbol of history. It is time to connect with global partners and take meaningful steps to retain this vessel and the history she embodies. Take action now to ensure Falls of Clyde remains a beacon of our shared maritime legacy.

Sign this petition to support the preservation of Falls of Clyde and encourage proactive measures to save this invaluable historical ship from being lost to the ocean.
