The Issue

I grew up in the Historic West Park Area of Allentown, PA, a place rich in history and community spirit. It has always been a safe haven for families, fostering warmth and neighborly connections. However, recent developments threaten this cherished neighborhood.

An organization is planning to transform a historic church into a homeless resource facility that would cater to individuals, including those with substance abuse problems. While addressing homelessness and substance abuse is undoubtedly important, the chosen location raises serious concerns for the safety and character of our neighborhood.

The prospective facility would stand just one block away from a local hospital and a school, posing potential risks to both healthcare professionals and young students. Introducing potentially dangerous individuals into such proximity to these vital community spaces could disrupt the peace and safety that residents have long enjoyed.

Additionally, the area already struggles with insufficient parking. Residents find it nearly impossible to secure street parking, which will worsen if this facility materializes without adequate on-site parking solutions. The anticipated increase in traffic and strain on community resources could prove untenable for our tight-knit neighborhood.

We are not against finding ways to support the homeless or those battling substance abuse but advocating for careful consideration when determining suitable locations for such facilities. We must retain the essence of our neighborhood's historic roots and ensure that any development aligns with the community's long-standing values and infrastructure capacities.

Please join us in preserving the Historic West Park Area by urging local authorities and planners to reconsider this site's use. We call on them to engage with the community in finding better locations that would serve both the target population and the residents of Allentown effectively.

Sign this petition to let our voices be heard, to protect the legacy and safety of the Historic West Park Area, and to encourage solutions that reflect both compassion and feasibility.
