Well today, quite frankly, was a sad day for our initiative. Despite our efforts, support and proposals, the City will not budge from their position to completely remove Manitoba's last remaining rail turntable.
During a meeting at City Hall today we had a some honest discussion however understanding the needle would not be moved by our efforts, focused on the creation of an off site memorial to the turntable in CN Park, very close to the Museum and Station.
The concept to is bring the motor that powered movement of the turntable and a portion of the wall adjacent to the motor and have it mounted on concrete. The original plaque with the names of the 17 community members will be transferred onto that piece of remaining wall and finally two interpretive displays talking about the history, etc will be erected.
We have been assured that we will be informed as to when the turntable will be dismantled so we may document that moment.
On a positive note, we have been very happy to bring this issue to light, educate and see the support we have garnered. We are hoping to harness some of that energy to perhaps focus on other projects and will at that point ask for either donation or actual participation to try and accomplish some of these goals.
Thank you to the over 470 people that have signed the petition to date. We will keep the petition open until the turntable is actually physically dismantled.
