Music performances are rated based on the following:
Adjudication:
Rating Scales: Judges use standardized rating scales (e.g., Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor) to assess various aspects of the performance, such as tone quality, intonation, technique, interpretation, and stage presence.
Comments: Judges provide written or recorded feedback, offering constructive criticism and highlighting areas for improvement.
Overall Score: An average score is calculated from the judges' individual ratings to determine the group's overall placement.
Rubrics:
Detailed Criteria: Rubrics outline specific criteria for each aspect of the performance, providing a more objective and transparent evaluation process.
Point Values: Each criterion is assigned a point value, allowing for a quantitative assessment of the performance.
Additional factors that may influence grading include:
Difficulty of Repertoire: The complexity and technical demands of the chosen music may be considered.
Age and Experience Level: The performers' age and experience may be factored into the evaluation.
Ultimately, the goal of grading at music performance festivals is to provide constructive feedback to performers, encourage growth and development, and celebrate musical achievement.
