The Issue

Our Oakbrook community in St. Augustine, Florida is a peaceful haven for families, long-time residents, and retirees. It’s a place where children play freely, neighbors build lasting relationships, and residents take comfort in the quiet, safety, and charm of their surroundings. The proposal to issue a Special Use Permit for a commercial indoor and outdoor wedding and event venue at 855 Cherry Tree Rd. threatens to upset this delicate balance.

The introduction of a commercial event venue in the heart of our residential neighborhood brings with it persistent noise, increased traffic, and frequent late-night gatherings. These disruptions not only threaten our rest and peace of mind but risk fundamentally changing the character of our community—turning a tranquil neighborhood into a bustling entertainment corridor.

Several Oakbrook homes back up directly to this property, and the increased noise, lighting, and activity would severely impact those residents’ ability to enjoy their homes and outdoor spaces. These homeowners, who have invested in Oakbrook for its peaceful environment, would now be forced to endure the disruption of regular events just beyond their backyards—resulting in a likely decrease in property values and diminished quality of life.

Communities that have faced similar proposals have seen diminished home values and a decline in resident satisfaction. As the atmosphere shifts from peaceful to chaotic, families may begin to look elsewhere, weakening the close-knit fabric we’ve spent decades building.

Traffic is another major concern. Our streets were not designed to handle the volume and congestion that frequent large events would bring. This poses a real safety risk—especially for children, walkers, bikers, and elderly residents who enjoy our quiet roads.

We respectfully ask our county officials to consider the unique residential nature of Oakbrook and to protect the values that define our neighborhood. Commercial venues belong in commercial zones, where the infrastructure is designed to accommodate such use—not in the middle of family neighborhoods.

By signing this petition, you’re joining a collective stand to preserve the integrity, safety, and peacefulness of Oakbrook—now and for generations to come.
