The Beaver River Trail is under threat!

The section of the trail that runs through the eastern neighbourhood of Thornbury (near the water treatment plant) is rich with a mature tree canopy. It is one of the few sections of this trail that is off-road and offers a shaded refuge, calm and safe from cars.  Many residents of this neighbourhood use this trail for their daily activities like walking their dogs, while others from across Thornbury and Clarksburg use it as a means of active transportation to the town center. Beyond its human usage, the trail is also a natural abode to diverse bird, animal, and plant species.

Despite its popularity and importance to our community and natural ecosystem, the Beaver River Trail lacks the protection it needs to warrant its preservation. It has been built on an unopened road allowance, and today the town is considering an application by a builder to pave over part of the trail. We can't stand by and lose this treasure that is a part of our community’s identity, our home to many local fauna and flora, and our green gateway to the town.

We implore the Thornbury Municipal Government to recognize the Beaver River Trail as a an indispensable part of our natural heritage, work with builders to find alternatives to cutting the tree canopy.

Furthermore, we request that the town cement the protection of this section of the trail by initiating a "Stop Up And Close Process" on the untraveled Alice Street East extension and untraveled Russel Street, thus providing it with the protection it deserves.

Not only would this preserve the trail for us, the current users, but also for future generations who deserve to know the beauty and tranquility of this space.

Sign this petition today and let's work together to ensure the preservation of the Beaver River Trail.
