Petition updatePreserve Salmon Arm's remaining Heritage Buildings and their stories.A Sad Day for Heritage in Salmon Arm BC

Preserving Dilkusha

Mar 28, 2017
In spite of the City of Salmon Arm's Strategic Heritage Plan, and considerable involvement from residents and from people beyond Salmon Arm in support of Preserving Dilkusha aka The Orchard House / Minos, this circa 1912 historic home built by Col. Bernard Scott and family, is now scheduled (again) to be demolished. The vote was unanimous by Council and Mayor Cooper, at yesterday's Council meeting, to proceed with demolition, unless they receive a 'solid proposal within the next 60 days to have the building relocated elsewhere'. Somehow, the City seemed unable to understand that the new aquatic center and parking could be located on the property and the historic building could also be retained. In spite of over 550 petition signatures and a 100 page proposal package outlining in depth a number of scenarios and rationale on how the City could achieve its goal, and this building - one of Salmon Arm's few remaining original homes, could be given new life, the City was unable to see a bigger picture, one that embraced and supported heritage. Yes, this is a sad day for Heritage in Salmon Arm. Thank you, each of you, for expressing your support for "Heritage Matters".
