Preserve rural charm of Log City Rd in Amsterdam
The Issue
My family and I moved to Amsterdam, New York, five years ago, enchanted by the breathtaking rural landscape and the welcoming demeanor of our few neighbors on Log City Rd. The rolling fields and open spaces provided a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. One of these captivating parcels of land sits just behind Log City Rd and Route 30, a piece of nature that sealed our decision to call this place home.
Recently, a 'For Sale' sign has appeared on this very parcel. This news has affected us deeply, as it threatens the tranquility and natural beauty that defines our community. Our town supervisor has plans to transform Amsterdam into a "destination location". However, for many of us, including my family, that very parcel of land is already our dream destination. Altering its rural character would not only impact us but also change the essence of our neighborhood drastically.
Amsterdam is special because of its rural charm and the tight-knit community that thrives here. Rather than turning open lands into commercial ventures that traffic-heavy businesses would bring, we need to prioritize preserving the natural landscapes that make this town unique and appealing to both its residents and visitors who seek refuge in its peaceful environment.
There is ample evidence to suggest that overdevelopment can lead to a myriad of complications, such as increased traffic, loss of wildlife habitats, and diminished property values. According to the American Farmland Trust, America loses 1.3 million acres of rural land each year to sprawling development, which exacerbates these issues. This transformation would erode the sense of community and the agricultural backdrop that so many residents, like myself, value deeply.
Our vision for Amsterdam should include maintaining its rural areas. This does not mean halting progress but building around the established open landscapes that define our community. Instead of commercializing every available parcel, we propose investing in initiatives that promote eco-friendly tourism or recreational activities that align with our town’s rural identity.
We urge our fellow residents and the local government to envision a future that respects the original charm of what makes Amsterdam special and preserves it for future generations. Stand with us to protect the rural nature of Log City Rd and ensure that our home remains the peaceful haven we've come to love.
Please sign this petition to voice your support for maintaining the rural identity of Log City Rd and oppose plans that threaten to commercialize our cherished landscape.
