The Issue

For 90 years, the trails along Cleaveland Avenue and Violet City within the majestic Mammoth Cave have been living testaments to the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.). These trails are more than just pathways; they are threads of history woven through the fabric of our nation's past. Each step taken along these aged routes tells a tale of perseverance, innovation, and the undying spirit of a group dedicated to preserving natural beauty during a time of economic hardship. Personally, I find these trails to be an irreplaceable portal to history that merges beautifully with the awe-inspiring underground landscape.

However, these historic trails are now in danger, threatened by the encroaching wave of modernization through paving and concreting. The very bricks and mortar that are laid to improve accessibility are, paradoxically, obscuring the narratives embedded within the soil and stones. Though intentions may be noble, seeking to offer these extraordinary experiences to a broader audience, we must not forget the initial intent of the C.C.C.: to preserve, not to pave over.

As we brand new paths with the footprints of today, let us remember and respect the footprints already etched by history. Protecting these trails from further alteration preserves our ability to engage with our heritage. By maintaining these trails in their natural, rugged form, we honor those who traversed this terrain long before us, those who built the very paths we tread—no less than a pilgrimage into our collective past.

Preservation, however, does not mean locking history behind barriers. Instead, let us explore alternative solutions that can ensure both accessibility for all visitors while maintaining the integrity of these historic trails. Innovations in guided tours, virtual reality experiences, or selective preservation could offer a harmonious balance between accessibility and conservation.

Together, we can advocate for a more thoughtful approach that honors the essence of Mammoth Cave and the C.C.C. legacy, while also ensuring that every person, regardless of ability, can experience this wonder. Let us not erase the past in our journey toward the future. Sign this petition to call upon park authorities, conservationists, and policymakers to recognize the value of these historic trails and to act in their preservation. Our story, our history, and our natural wonders depend on it. Let us keep the stories alive—for us and for generations yet to come. Please sign and help us protect this invaluable cultural and historical asset.

Sign today to safeguard the intrinsic beauty and historical significance of Mammoth Cave's C.C.C. trails.
