Preserve Park Vista's Journalism Program
Preserve Park Vista's Journalism Program
The Issue
For my entire time at Park Vista Community High School, I have been part of the journalism program. It's not just a course to me but an essential aspect of our education system that fosters critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills. Now, the administration is considering dismantling this vital department, which includes key AICE classes and our school's beloved newspaper.
Park Vista serves as a beacon of learning in West Palm Beach, FL, equipping students with the tools they need to succeed in the real world. The journalism program is a cornerstone of this mission. It's not just about learning to write articles. It's about understanding the world around us, questioning information, and developing the ability to communicate effectively.
The program offers AICE classes that provide students college-level learning opportunities, making them more competitive and prepared for their future academic endeavors. These classes have been instrumental in enhancing students' writing and analytical skills. Eliminating these courses would be a disservice to current and future students who need diverse educational opportunities to thrive.
Removing the journalism department and newspaper would silence the student body’s voice. The newspaper is a platform to express, inform, and connect. It creates an engaged student community aware of their surroundings.
I urge the Park Vista Community High School administration to reconsider their decision or make adaptations. Instead of cutting entire programs, we should advocate to still provide some sort of journalism at Park Vista. Writing is fundamental to learning and should not only be retained.
Join me in defending the integrity and quality of our education by ensuring the journalism department continues to be a part of Park Vista’s academic offerings. Sign the petition to keep our program alive and thriving for years to come. Let’s protect our students’ right to a comprehensive education. Please sign and share this petition with your friends, family, and fellow students.
