The Issue

Ever since moving to Overstone Gate, the promise of being close to nature and growing a portion of our own food was a vision come true. With the various life challenges weighing on our community the allotment space was to become a sanctuary, offering not just a place to cultivate fruit and vegetables but a means to improve our mental and physical well-being through organic practices and nature immersion.

Alarmingly, plans to repurpose these cherished allotments into another play area for teenagers and younger children are underway by Overstone Parish Council . It’s crucial to highlight that the allotments form an integral part of the planning permission for our new housing estate here at Overstone Gate, Northampton. While it is essential for children to have spaces to play, there are already existing play areas across the estate, which should be invested in by the Parish Council.   Many of these could be enhanced to adequately meet the needs of all age groups without losing our allotments.

Overstone's allotments are vital in fostering the health and well-being of all residents, from adults to children. Gardening nourishes the body, mind, and soul, allowing residents to engage in sustainable living practices, promoting a greener lifestyle, and facilitating a deeper connection to nature.

Research consistently shows that access to green spaces and the opportunity to grow one's own food enhances physical and mental health. According to Public Health England, exposure to local green spaces can reduce the risk of numerous diseases, improve mood, and extend life expectancy.

Rather than convert these environmentally beneficial spaces into yet another playground, let's work on improving the existing facilities for children without sacrificing the allotments. These green spaces are diverse environments that support wildlife, improve air quality, and play a critical role in combating urban heat and climate change.

Join me in opposing the Overstone Parish Council's current plans. Let us safeguard our allotments and promote a healthier, sustainable future for all residents of Overstone Gate. Sign this petition to urge our local parish council to prioritise improving existing play areas while preserving our invaluable allotments.
