Press Release Given at where we were arrested at Maple Street Cemetery. My name is Jack Trifero, and I’ve been a proud business owner and citizen, in New Canaan for four decades now. I would like to make just a few brief comments. First, all of us are standing on what known as the Maple Street Cemetery, a piece of property M2 has claimed to own at various times and which has been a flash point in town deliberations for determining the scale, setbacks and other important requirements of concern to New Canaan residents related to the Merritt Village development. It was under that ownership claim... that Arnold Karp of M2 had Terry Spring and I arrested and charged with criminal trespassing. And this is also the spot where Mr Karp began to throw rocks at us, angered upon being told that we were not on his land, but on the burial ground/ plot of Ezra Benedict. This is all on the police record by the way. Based on evidence presented in our case the criminal trespassing charges were dismissed in the Norwalk court on February 1, 2018. In other words, you can’t arrest someone for trespassing on land you do not have clear title to. I believe that the title search we conducted to win this case is a clear indication of a development run amuck. But this is about more than that… This is about the power of truth and the horror of desecration of sacred grave sites and the importance of preserving and honoring our town fathers and our history. In light of the evidence from the title search, it is our goal here to have the Town of New Canaan review this matter and have this ancient burial ground and drift way/ easement to it restored to its original condition. It is time for our Town’s people and Descendents of buried family members to take action. Jack Trifero
