We are making great progress at protecting the Sterling Oak. (Awesome news!)
Here's the latest:
-The CCF has agreed to decrease the size of their proposed apartment building.
-Their new proposed dimensions avoid cutting the trunk of the Sterling Oak, but they are asking the planning commission for special permission to dig deep into the vast root system, which would most likely kill the tree within a few years. Several landmark trees would still be destroyed, and the land would have to be "cut and filled" just to level the ground for building.
-There's a meeting Monday night (September 14) at 7:00 pm to gather public comments.

I am going to ask them to protect the roots as the city guidelines state... Because it is my understanding that the CCF is asking to change our city guidelines... Just for their apartment building.
Keep in mind that the CCF does not own the land. The land was purchased with Sterling Heights' Covid relief funds years ago, and the CCF is trying to purchase the land for a deep, deep discount.
