🌳
Dear neighbors and supporters,
As our petition gains momentum, it’s critical to remind everyone why we’re asking the city to stop and truly reconsider adding sidewalks along Mandarin Road — one of the most scenic, historic, and tree-lined corridors in Jacksonville.
📚 Research by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and urban forestry experts shows that standard sidewalk and curb construction often kills or weakens mature trees by cutting or compacting their roots. Even when healthy trees survive the initial construction, they often decline over time, become unstable, and ultimately need to be removed — erasing decades of shade, wildlife habitat, and neighborhood character.
🌳 This is not just theory — other cities have faced similar mistakes:
A court halted Los Angeles’ plan to remove over 13,000 trees for sidewalks because they failed to protect the urban forest and the wildlife that depends on it.
Studies confirm that newly planted saplings can’t replace what large, mature trees provide — it can take 50 years or more to restore the cooling, beauty, and storm protection we have today.
👉 Mandarin Road is special — and protecting our historic tree canopy should never be the price we pay for new sidewalks.
Instead of repeating mistakes made elsewhere, we urge city leaders to:
✅ Reconsider the current sidewalk plans for Mandarin Road altogether.
✅ Work with residents, arborists, and conservation experts to explore truly community-driven, tree-friendly alternatives — or to preserve the road’s historic character without sidewalks at all.
✅ Protect the canopy and wildlife that make Mandarin Road beloved by generations of residents and visitors.
🗣️ Our voices matter — and together we can persuade the city to make the right decision.
Please continue to share this petition, talk to your neighbors, and let’s stand united to defend Mandarin Road’s natural and historic charm.
🌿 Thank you for caring and for helping protect the heart of Mandarin.
