Every year, like many other families, our ritual is to visit Legion Park to view the spirited light display. Conveniently located and freely accessible, this is a tradition so deeply embedded that it feels as though it is a part of our community's identity. The recent plans to move these iconic light displays are disheartening. 

These light displays at Legion Park have delighted countless residents and visitors for years. They illuminate our holiday spirit and signify our unity, love, and the joy of the holiday season. They are not just exhibits, they are a reflection of Owensboro's heart, and their removal would be nothing short of a blow to the city's spirit.

While it's understandable that the city of Owensboro is working towards expanding Christmas lights downtown and in other areas, it's unfair and unjust that it must be at the expense of the much-loved light display at Legion Park. Expansion doesn't necessitate replacement. The presence of the light show at Legion Park does not prevent the city from brightening other locations.

We urge the city authorities to review their plans and find an alternate approach, one that preserves and respects our cherished community traditions. The light display at Legion Park must stay. We ask fellow residents of Owensboro to join us in our endeavor.
