Preserve Historical Tree Stump at Iowa Park
The Issue
For years, I have marveled at the tree that grew through an old stonework stairway in Palisades Kepler State Park. This park, roughly 90 years old, holds countless memories for me , my family, and so many families through the generations .The tree, having entwined itself with history, stood as a testament to the passage of time and nature's resilience. I would point out this cool tree to grandchildren, other visiting relatives and friends . It was amazing to see how it had beautifully disrupted the old stones and grew tall over the years. The tree had finally died and was taken down just this spring and now only a stump remains. Yet, even in its current state, it offers something incredibly valuable — a perfect seat from which to overlook the serene vista of the river and its surrounding bluffs.
This tree stump is more than just a piece of wood; it is a historical landmark that connects us to the origins and stories of our park. It represents resilience and continuity, symbolizing how nature and history intertwine. Preserving it not only honors the past but also enhances our experience of the park. I propose that we keep this stump as a feature in the park, accompanied by an informational plaque that educates visitors about the park's history and the tree's lifetime within it.
Updating this area with a seating designation around the stump provides a dual purpose. It acts as a resting spot for hikers and park-goers while also engaging them with the park's storied past. This initiative could be an excellent opportunity to collaborate with local historians, park rangers, and community members who hold a deep interest in preserving the rich history of Iowa.
According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, state parks like ours attract millions of visitors annually, linking people to the natural beauty and history of the region. By preserving this stump, we maintain a piece of living history in our community, creating a shared space where educational programs and storytelling sessions could be held, enriching our cultural heritage.
Join us in advocating for the preservation of this symbolic tree stump, not just to conserve a piece of the park’s past but to contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of nature and history. Your signature can help us make a powerful statement to the park's administration and ensure that this humble stump continues to inspire and educate visitors for generations to come. Let’s work together to preserve this unique feature of our Iowa state park. Please sign the petition today.
