Preserve Green Spaces at Citizens Park for Community Use

The Issue

I am a resident who shares a yard with Citizens Park, having called this place home for the past 15 years. I've observed first-hand the value of these green spaces. The park has grown with us. Our children have met new friends, competed in YSI soccer league, dreamt big with their pop warner football matches, and seen their dreams come alive right here. More than 100 Gainesville residents come together every week for an ultimate frisbee league game in these same fields.

It's not just a park. It's our community's gathering space, our field of dreams, the heart of our neighborhood. But now, there are propositions to repurpose our green spaces for parking lots and playgrounds. These changes will not only disrupt the natural beauty but also hamper our communal activities that have been a part of our lives. Although there seems to be an emphasis on 'improvements', these changes might deprive us of the attribute that makes our park unique – its suitability for multipurpose use.

Our plea is not against enhancements but rather the misuse of space. It is critical that any development should only serve to enrich the current uses rather than replace them. Further, maintaining the grassy fields rather than transforming them into hard surfaces could also pose environmental benefits, providing natural habitats for our wildlife.

Citizens Park should continue to be a thriving, multipurpose green space that caters to everyone in the community. Let's protect the soul of our neighborhood. Let's keep Citizens Park green. Please join us in preserving this community asset. Sign this petition.
