Preserve funding for Cortland Youth Bureau Recreation Centre
The Issue
Growing up in Cortland, I've cherished countless memories at the Cortland Youth Bureau Recreation Centre. It has been a constant and safe haven for me and many other children over the years. A place where we not only play but also learn, grow, and form valuable friendships. It's heartbreaking to think that potential funding cuts might endanger this crucial establishment that has been pivotal in nurturing the youth of our community.
In its years of operation, the Cortland Youth Bureau Recreation Centre has offered numerous programs that accommodate both the physical and mental development of children. According to local records, over 2,000 children have benefited from its sports leagues, art classes, and educational workshops annually. These programs not only keep the youth engaged and productive but also teach essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, creativity, and resilience which are indispensable as they journey into adulthood.
However, recent budget discussions threaten to cut funding for the centre, potentially reducing its programs and services. This would not only deprive hundreds of children of safe recreational options but also increase the risk of them turning to less desirable alternatives. National data suggests that access to community programs like those offered at the Cortland Recreation Centre is linked to lower crime rates among youth and increased high school graduation rates.
The solution lies in prioritizing our children's futures by securing the necessary financial support for the centre. We are therefore calling on the local government to preserve, if not increase, the budget allocation for the Cortland Youth Bureau Recreation Centre. By doing so, they will be investing in a safer, more productive future for our community.
Join me in this important cause. By signing this petition, you lend your voice to protect and enhance a vital resource for our youth. Let's ensure that children in Cortland continue to have a place where they can feel secure, develop vital skills, and enjoy memorable childhood experiences. Your support can make a difference.
